About u3a
What is u3a?
u3a is a UK-wide movement of locally run, volunteer-led groups offering learning and social activities for people aimed at those no longer in full time employment. More information can be found on the u3a Trust website.
Is the u3a a charity?
Yes. Each local u3a is an independent charitable organisation run by volunteer trustees.
Do u3a courses lead to qualifications?
No. u3a learning is for enjoyment and personal development, not for formal certification.
Membership
Who can join the u3a?
Our primary focus is for older adults or those no longer in full-time employment. There is no upper or lower age limit.
Do I have to be retired?
No. You do not have to be retired — the focus is that you are not in full-time work and have the time to participate.
How much does membership cost?

Can I join part-way through the year?
Yes, we offer reduced membership fees for those joining later in the year. Please see our Join Us page for current rates.
Can I belong to more than one u3a?
Yes. You may join more than one u3a, although each u3a sets its own subscription. If you are already a member of another u3a you will join our u3a as an associated membership with a reduced rate. Please see our Join Us page for current rates.
Interest Groups and Activities
What activities do you offer?
Our interest groups cover a wide range of subjects including arts, languages, science, history, walking, music, IT, and more. All groups are run by members. Please see our Interest Groups page for current details.
Do I have to join an interest group?
No, you can just choose to attend the Open Meetings or take advantage of the Online Learning Events if you wish. You can choose how involved you wish to be and which Interest Groups you attend.
How do I join an interest group?
Once you are a member, you will be given a list of the coordinators contact details. You can contact the group coordinator directly or follow the instructions on the specific Groups page from this website. If you are struggling to contact the coordinator you can also contact the Existing Groups’ Facilitator.
What if a group is full?
If a group is full, you may be placed on a waiting list. We also encourage members to help form new groups where there is demand.
Can I start a new group?
Yes. u3a thrives on member participation. If you are willing to help organise a group and there is sufficient interest, we will support you. We have a dedicated New Groups’ Facilitator who can help you in this regard.
Meetings & Events
Do you hold regular meetings?
Yes, we hold monthly meetings with guest speakers, updates, and social time. Details are published on our website on the Events Page and newsletter.
Can I try a meeting before joining?
Prospective members are welcome to attend a meeting or taster session before joining. If it is an Open Meeting please come along to one of our events to get to know us or if it is a specific Interest Group, please contact the coordinator. You can contact the group coordinator directly or follow the instructions on the specific Groups page from this website. If you are struggling to contact the coordinator you can also contact the Existing Groups’ Facilitator.
Practical Questions
Are there any additional costs?
Some groups may ask for contributions to cover room hire, speakers, materials, refreshments or outings. These are usually kept to a minimum.
Do I need to use a computer or email?
Many communications are sent by email and information is shared online, but we try to accommodate members who prefer not to use digital services.
